Inside the Global Education Innovation Forum — Myanmar 2026

A reflection on a genuinely energising few days discussing how schools, teachers, and technology should meet the AI era — with purpose, and with ethics.

It's rare that an education conference actually feels urgent. This one did. The Global Education Innovation Forum (GEIF) — Myanmar 2026 was held under the theme "AI-Enhanced Education: Teaching with Purpose and Ethics," running first in Mandalay on 28 March and then in Yangon on 30 March at the Zealax Hotel, organised by the RVi Institute's Centre for Innovation in Education under The RVi Group, with the RVi Group as main sponsor[1][2]. I was honoured to speak alongside an impressive international line-up, including Nigel Killick (Harvard Business School, CEO of Reallyenglish) and Wayne Schlegel, an international education consultant, as we discussed how classroom teaching is being transformed by technology and what the future demands of educators[1].

The forum wasn't a typical showcase of shiny AI tools. It was, refreshingly, a serious conversation about pedagogy first — which is exactly the spirit I tried to bring to my own session, "Bridging Pedagogy with Technology."

Why this conversation matters right now

I opened by naming something every teacher in the room already felt in their bones: teaching has become measurably harder. Recent surveys show that 45% of teachers reported the 2024–25 school year as the most stressful of their entire careers, with 77% describing their jobs as stressful and 68% as overwhelming. Meanwhile, more than 70% of teachers say student misbehaviour has worsened since the pandemic, and 47% say students show little to no interest in learning — a figure that climbs to 58% among high school teachers[12][13].

These pressures didn't appear from nowhere. Attention spans have been reshaped by social media — researchers point to a likely causal link between social media use and rising ADHD-like symptoms in young people. Post-pandemic, rates of anxiety, depression, and youth mental health crises rose sharply, and bullying, both physical and cyber, increased. And now AI has added an entirely new layer of challenge: students increasingly ask, quite reasonably, "AI gives me all the answers and solves all my problems, so why do I need the teacher?" That question, uncomfortable as it is, was the real starting point of my talk.

A generation-defining shift needs a generation-defining response

I like to zoom out with a brief history lesson, because it recalibrates how we think about "disruption." Cave-wall scribbling appeared roughly 42,000 years ago. Writing systems, about 5,200 years ago. The printing press, 586 years ago. The chalkboard, textbook, and structured schooling as we know it, only about 200 years ago. Radio and television, 100 years ago. The PC, roughly 50 years ago. The internet, about 30 years ago. Mobile technology, about 15 years ago. And artificial intelligence, in its current transformative form, is only about three years old.

Every one of those earlier shifts eventually forced schools and teaching methods to adapt. AI is no different in kind — only in speed. That's why I argued the sector needs unprecedented innovation, not incremental tweaks. Teachers must shift from being transmitters of content to architects of learning environments, actively shaping critical thinking, lifelong learning habits, collaboration, communication, AI and digital safety, emotional resilience, and financial literacy. Schools, in turn, must recognise their role in society is changing: from simply "the best place to learn" toward "the safest place to be," and from "doing well in exams" toward "preparing students for an unknown future." Hiring practices already reflect this — employers are shifting from credential-based hiring toward skills-based hiring, and schools need entirely new departments, parent-engagement systems, and physical-and-digital safety infrastructure to match.

mySecondTeacher: putting "pedagogy first" into practice

The second half of my session moved from diagnosis to demonstration, walking through mySecondTeacher, the flipped-classroom platform built on three core truths I've come to rely on in over a decade of EdTech work.

Truth 1: students learn differently, and at different speeds. A single pace of instruction structurally fails a portion of every classroom, every time.

Truth 2: it's hard to teach well if you don't know what's actually in your students' minds. Without diagnostic visibility into where a student's understanding breaks down, teaching becomes guesswork dressed up as delivery.

Truth 3: the flipped classroom produces superior learning outcomes. This isn't just intuition — it's backed by a growing body of research. Flipping frees up face-to-face class time from passive lecturing and redirects it toward problem-solving, discussion, and application. Just as importantly, students who watch structured pre-class videos develop stronger self-directed learning habits and metacognitive skills — the ability to plan, monitor, and evaluate their own learning[3]. Multiple independent studies confirm that flipped models particularly benefit higher-order cognitive skills more than they benefit rote recall[4], and that flipping strengthens learners' capacity for self-regulation and cognitive flexibility, with the largest gains often seen among lower-achieving students[5].

mySecondTeacher was built to directly address all three truths: curriculum-aligned interactive videos covering all examinable content, diagnostic reports that surface not just what students got wrong but why they struggled, and streamlined tools for formative and summative assessment. The goal was never technology for its own sake — it was giving teachers back the bandwidth to do the parts of teaching that only humans can do well.

The two questions everyone wanted answered

As expected, the Q&A sessions gravitated toward the two anxieties every AI-in-education conversation eventually reaches. I want to expand on both here, because a soundbite answer rarely does either justice.

"Will teachers be replaced by AI?"

My answer

"Teachers who don't use AI will be replaced by teachers who use AI."

This isn't a rhetorical flourish — it's already playing out. AI is increasingly described in the sector as a "force multiplier" for learning: emerging analyses from this same forum's broader discussions point to AI-assisted teaching increasing knowledge retention by up to 40%, reducing teachers' administrative workload by up to 55% through automation and personalised learning systems, and improving concept mastery by around 20% (figures widely discussed at the forum and in related sector commentary)[6]. A teacher who ignores those tools isn't preserving some purer form of teaching — they're simply doing more manual work for a worse diagnostic picture of their students, while a colleague down the hall uses AI to free up hours for the human relationship-building that actually moves learning forward. The replacement risk was never "human vs. machine." It's "teacher who adapts" vs. "teacher who doesn't," and that gap is already widening in schools that have adopted AI-assisted diagnostic and content tools.

That said, this isn't an argument for AI without guardrails. The forum's own broader discussion flagged real risks alongside the benefits — reduced critical-thinking development if AI is used as an answer-dispenser rather than a scaffold, data privacy exposure, and a genuine risk of eroding human interaction if schools over-rotate toward automation[6]. The teachers who thrive won't be the ones who adopt AI uncritically. They'll be the ones who use it deliberately — to do the diagnostic and administrative heavy lifting, so they can spend saved time on mentorship, discussion, and the harder-to-automate parts of teaching.

"Will students even need to go to K12 schools in a world with AI?"

My answer

"Schools are needed not just to educate students in the cognitive domain, but also the affective, psychomotor, and conative domains — and as a result, ensuring students' overall wellbeing will be more important."

This answer rests on a distinction I think gets lost whenever AI-in-education debates narrow down to "can a chatbot teach algebra." The honest answer is: increasingly, yes, for pure content transfer. But content transfer has only ever been one of at least four domains that a complete education has to develop, a structure with roots in Bloom's taxonomy and its later extensions[7].

Cognitive domain

Knowledge, comprehension, analysis, and evaluation — the domain AI tools are genuinely strong at supporting and even accelerating.

Affective domain

Attitudes, values, motivation, and emotional responses — how a student learns to care about something, collaborate, and manage feelings, best developed through real human relationship and modelling[8].

Psychomotor domain

Physical and practical skills — coordination, hands-on craft, and embodied learning that simply cannot be taught through a screen[9].

Conative domain

Will, intrinsic motivation, and goal-directed persistence — the drive that determines whether a student actually acts on what they know[10].

Post-pandemic research shows 87% of schools reported worsened student socio-emotional development, with sharp increases in anxiety, depression, and bullying — underscoring that the affective and wellbeing dimensions of schooling are not optional extras, but core functions schools must actively manage.

An AI tutor, however sophisticated, cannot referee a group project conflict, model resilience after a failed exam, coach a nervous student through public speaking, or notice the quiet signs of a child in distress. Those are the affective, psychomotor, and conative jobs of school — and they are becoming more important, not less, precisely because AI is absorbing more of the cognitive-transfer workload. This is also consistent with emerging academic frameworks calling for a "balanced integration" of AI that explicitly protects student and teacher wellbeing rather than treating it as secondary to academic throughput[11]. My honest prediction: schools don't disappear in an AI-saturated world — they refocus. Away from being content-delivery factories, and toward being the place where a child's whole development, not just their test scores, is actively looked after.

Leaving Myanmar

What stayed with me most wasn't any single statistic or slide, but the sheer appetite in the room — educators from across Myanmar showing up not to be sold a tool, but to genuinely wrestle with how their profession is changing[1]. The forum also recognised excellence directly, with an Inspiring Educator of the Year Award and Education Innovation Awards celebrating schools demonstrating strong AI integration and positive social impact[1]. If there's one message I hope travelled home with every teacher in that room, it's this: the tools will keep changing, generation after generation, as they have for 42,000 years. What doesn't change is the responsibility to teach with purpose — and now, with AI in the mix, with ethics too.
